Vaccine visits arrive a few at a time, so most pet owners never see the yearly total until a bill lands in a month that was already tight. Owners with more than one pet feel this most, since due dates for different animals tend to bunch together after a busy spring or a new adoption.

The planner multiplies the number of vaccine doses each dog and cat receives per year by the price per dose you enter, adds the exam fees you pay per pet per year, and totals the result across your household. It then divides by twelve to show a monthly set aside figure. Prices vary widely by region and clinic, so the defaults are only placeholders and you should replace them with what your own vet charges.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter how many dogs and cats you have and how many vaccine doses each receives in a year, based on your vet's recommended schedule.
  2. Add the average price per dose and the exam fees you pay per pet per year at your clinic.
  3. Read the annual total and monthly set aside, and compare the per dog and per cat figures.

What the math assumes

  • Every vaccine dose costs the same price you enter, regardless of type.
  • Exam fees are entered as a yearly total per pet, and the same figure applies to dogs and cats.
  • Titer tests, sick visits, parasite prevention, and boarding related requirements are not included.
  • Prices are assumed flat for the year; the planner does not apply any inflation or discount.
  • Default values (3 doses per dog, 2 per cat, $30 per dose, $60 exam fees) are placeholders to replace with your clinic's prices, not national averages.

Frequently asked questions

How many doses per year should I enter for an adult dog?

It depends on your vet's protocol and your dog's lifestyle. Count each separate injection or nasal dose given in a typical year, such as rabies, a combination distemper vaccine, leptospirosis, and bordetella if your dog is groomed or boarded.

Does this cover a puppy or kitten's first year?

Not by default. Puppies and kittens usually get a series of doses over several visits, so raise the doses per pet and the exam fees per pet for that first year, then bring them back down for adult years.

Why are exam fees entered per pet per year instead of per visit?

Some clinics bundle multiple vaccines into one visit while others split them. Entering the total exam fees you expect to pay per pet in a year handles both cases without needing extra inputs.

Can I use this to compare two clinics?

Yes. Run the planner once with each clinic's dose price and exam fee, keeping the pet and dose counts the same, and compare the annual totals.
